Design
Biomorphic Pavilion
2022

About
In this ~7 weeks design workshop focused on biomorphic design, I explored a geological phenomenon known as ocean sand, in Bahamas (see following ref image below) - sculpted seabeds formed over hundreds to thousands of years through pressure and natural aging. This process conveys a sense of timelessness and tautness to its form, which serves as a reference for creating an organic and enduring design that respects the pavilion’s local surroundings.
The aim of the pavilion is to create a place for rest and wandering for hikers seeking a sanctuary when visiting Epping Forest, located in the northeast of London. The spatial flow of the monolithic pavilion draws inspiration from the organic circulation of ocean sand dunes in the Bahamas. The structure adopts a parametric free-form design, with flowing curves that resemble geological “shelf-like” formations, along with cantilevered overhangs that provide shade while evoking a sense of weightlessness.
Tools & Skills
The process of this ~ 7 weeks design workshop involved a series of studies into the forms of various geological phenomena, as well as explorations of how design-aided software could be used to best realize the pavilion design.
Tools - Rhino, Maya, Unreal, Photoshop
